Fever is the most common reason parents seek care — and most fevers are the immune system doing its job. Here's a clear, age-based guide.

Under 3 months

Any temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs prompt medical evaluation. Don't wait — this age group can't be assessed at home.

3 months to 3 years

Treat comfort, not the number. Come in if fever lasts more than 24 hours (under age 2), the child is unusually drowsy or irritable, isn't drinking, or has fever above 102.2°F.

Over 3 years

Watch behavior more than the thermometer. A playful kid with 101°F is usually fine; a listless kid with 100.6°F may not be. Seek care for fever over 3 days, stiff neck, rash, trouble breathing, or dehydration.
