Sinus infections are miserable, but antibiotics aren't always the answer. The majority are caused by viruses, which antibiotics don't treat.
Often viral — antibiotics won't help
Symptoms that improve within about 10 days are usually viral. Rest, fluids, saline rinses, and decongestants are the mainstays.
May be bacterial — worth an exam
Symptoms lasting more than 10 days, high fever, severe facial pain, or a "double worsening" (improving then getting worse) can point to a bacterial infection. A provider can examine you and prescribe antibiotics only if they're truly needed.
