An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) records the electrical activity of your heart. It is painless, takes about five minutes, and can reveal a lot about your heart's rhythm and health.

What an EKG measures

The test captures the electrical impulses that trigger each heartbeat. It can detect irregular rhythms (arrhythmias), signs of a heart attack, thickening of heart walls, and other conditions that may not cause obvious symptoms.

Who might need an EKG

  • Anyone with chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or dizziness
  • Patients preparing for surgery
  • Commercial drivers (DOT physical requirement for some)
  • People with a family history of heart disease
  • Anyone whose employer or provider recommends a baseline recording
